Islamic frames for children

Among the greatest blessings of Allah SWT is our children. There is no greater joy than holding your newborn child, caring for and teaching him/her our beliefs and morals, and seeing them grow into practising, law-abiding, God-fearing Muslims.

The Quran has a special dua that a Believer can make for finding happiness in his/her child.

In Surah Furqan, verse 74, Allah (SWT) says:

“And those who say: Oh our Lord, gift us a gift for our spouses, our children, and future generations the coolness of eyes and make us leaders over those who are righteous, pious, and fearful.”

In the above verse, Ù‚ُرَّ‌ةَ أَعْيُنٍ, qurrata ayuni, means “the coolness of eyes”. It is an Arabic metaphor which means “a source of joy and comfort that cools your eyes.” Tears of joy, in Arabic and in the Quran, are referred to as “coolness of the eyes.”

The expression ‘the coolness of eyes’ also appears in Surah Taha, verse 40.

"[And We favoured you (O Moses)] when your sister went and said, ‘Shall I direct you to someone who will be responsible for him?’ So We restored you to your mother that her eyes cool (she might be content) and not grieve."

When Asiah, the pious wife of the evil Pharoah found baby Moses (AS) in the river, she picked him up, and said: “qurratu ‘ainil-lii wa lak”, may this baby become the coolness of my eyes and yours, referring to her husband.

Perfect Gifts for Couples

What gift do you usually give to a bride and groom on their wedding? A glassware set? Some cash? Or jewellery? Mercy of Allah

Among the 99 Beautiful Names of Allah, the two that we recite the most are "Al Rahman" and "Al Raheem". The two names are part of the opening verse of the Quran, "Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahmeem". Since "Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Raheem" precedes every chapter of the Quran, except one, we recite it when we say the Surahs. In fact, we say these two Beautiful Names of Allah in every salah of ours. An entire Surah is titled "Al Rahman". "Al Rahman" in English is translated as "Most Gracious" and "Al Raheem" as "Most Merciful". Both "Al Rahman" and "Al Raheem" are derived from the root "Rahm", which means womb in Arabic.

Al Asma Al Husna

How do you define Allah? How do you know Him? And how do you call to Him? By his attributes. Allah is known to have 99 Most Beautiful Names, each Name defining a Divine attribute. For example, the Name 'Al-Khaaliq' means 'The Creator' as Allah has created everything in the Heavens and the Earth. He is 'Al Ghafoor', or the 'All-Forgiving' as He readily forgives a believer who sincerely repents. He is 'Al-Adl', or 'The Utterly Just', as He is the Best Judge in all matters of life and the world. The 99 Names of Allah are collectively called 'Asma Al Husna' in Arabic, where 'asma' means 'names' and 'al husna' means 'beautiful'.

Why Islamic calligraphy art?

Why do Muslims like to decorate their homes with Islamic calligraphy art? Where and how did the art of writing the Quranic verses begin? Even as modern innovations such as wall decals and digital prints have added to the world of Islamic calligraphy art, today we plan to step back and talk about the origins of Islamic calligraphy.

Ramadan is over. Eid is over. How are you feeling?

Generally, two kinds of emotions set in after the end of the holy month.

One kind is that of contentment, which results from making the most of Ramadan, including intensive reciting of the Quran, offering nightlong prayers, giving zakat, being good to other human beings, and staying away from evil.

Islamic gifts for Eid

Gifting is a sunnah, and one of the ways to strengthen relationships between the recipient and the giver, and between fellow Muslims. Gifting is a symbol of good etiquette, and it has been narrated in Hadith that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to accept gifts. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) is reported to have said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to accept gifts and reward people for giving them.”

Relying on Allah

Human beings are the best of creations of Allah. In the Quran, man's elevated status is clearly expressed in verse 30 of Surah Al Baqarah: "Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: 'I will create a vicegerent on earth.' They said: 'Wilt Thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood?- whilst we do celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy holy (name)?' He said: "I know what ye know not."
