Text: Al-Rahman Al-Raheem

Translation: The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful

The Names ‘Al-Rahman’, ‘Al-Raheem’ are part of the opening verse of the Quran ‘Bismillahi-ar-Rahman-ar-Raheem’, which is also the opening verse of all the chapters of the Quran except one.

Indeed, the importance of the two names cannot be overstated, as all good that happens in our life is by the Mercy and Grace of Allah – from vital functions such as breathing, sleeping, eating, seeing, walking, hearing, etc to big achievements like winning an award, or completing an important project, or getting admission to a big college.

Both ‘Rahman’ and ‘Raheem’ come from ‘Rahmah’ which means ‘mercy’. But there is a slight difference in the use of both. According to most scholars, Rahman is used to indicate Allah’s Mercy for all of Creation, while Raheem is used to suggest Allah’s Mercy for Believers. Allah knows best.
