Quick Overview

Text: Al-Ghani Al-Hameed

Translation:

A-Ghani and Al-Hameed are two of the 99 Beautiful Names of Allah

Translation

Al Ghani: The Rich, The Self-Sufficient, The One Who is free of all needs. The One Whom we can neither help nor harm. If we do good, it is not because Allah is in need of that good, it is because that good benefits us. If we do evil, that evil only damages us.

Al Hameed: The One Who Is Worthy of All Praise. In our daily prayers, we thank Allah when we recite Surah Al Fatiha (‘Alhamdillah-ir-Rabbil-Aalameen). We feel and express gratitude to him not only for His Blessings, but also for praise Him for His Perfection.

Allah is in no need of our praise (Al Ghani) but we need to praise him (Al Hameed) because without His Mercy and Grace, we wouldn’t even exist, let alone anything else. All of Allah’s Creations celebrate His praise.

‘Al Ghani’ and ‘Al Hameed’ are paired in Surah Al Baqarah and Surah Al Faatir:

‘O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth. And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes. And know that Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.’ (Quran 2:267)

‘O mankind, you are those in need of Allah, while Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.’ (Quran 35:15)
