Al-Aliyy Al-Azeem
Text: Al-Aliyyul Azeem
Translation:
Al-Aliyy and Al-Azeem are two of the 99 Beautiful Names of Allah
Al-Aliy: The One Who is above and exceeds all others. The Most High, above whom there is nothing higher. The One whose rank and station are the Most High. The One who is above and surpasses all that has ever been, all that there now is, and all that shall ever be.
Al-Azeem: The Magnificent. ‘Al-Azeem’ is a superlative form of `izam, greatness, magnanimity, dignity, honor. The Absolute Azeem is the One whose greatness cannot be grasped by the limited human mind. The One who is of perfect and absolute greatness. Everything else – His creation – is insignificant.
The two related Names have been paired together in Ayat Al Kursi:
'Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.' (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255)
Also in Surah Ash-Suraa:
‘To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, and He is the Most High, the Most Great.' (Surah Ash-Shuraa 42:4)
